VILLAGE GREEN
(
Pueblo
Verde)
Santa Fe, New Mexico
The word pueblo is Spanish for “village”. A pueblo village is an assemblage of “room blocks”. Traditionally, the “room blocks” were inner cavernous dwelling spaces which made a perimeter wall. The room blocks often setback as they grew to form sunny ledges for outdoor living. The open areas between or encircling the interior of the “room blocks” was a plaza. The plaza contained shared spaces such as “pit houses” where daily routine activities such as cooking took place. The roofs of the “pit houses” were nearly flush with the surrounding ground surface. Like the pit houses there were also the great “kivas” which served the important social function of bringing together many members of the community.
