VILLAGE GREEN (Pueblo Verde) Santa Fe, New Mexico
Much like a traditional pueblo, this site has two ground levels. One (roofscape) is entered flush from Alto Street, the other (groundscape) from the alley along the river. The dwelling room blocks form a perimeter for both grounds. The lower ground is the private plaza containing the sleeping rooms. The sleeping rooms face into the private Village Green or private garden space. The upper dwelling “room blocks” form a setback and make a social pubic space like the great “kivas”. Like a pueblo village, the private sleeping rooms are kept cool at the bottom and the heat of the living and cooking spaces rises. The lower ground surrounds the living dwelling rooms. The upper setbacks make overhangs creating a variety of shaded garden spaces.
